Aditi's Inspiring Journey To The Top With The Social Unicorns

I grew up in a conventional family. Dad has always been a disciplinarian. You know, the kind of strict who thought, ‘Ghar pe cable bachon ke 10th boards ke baad hi lagega’. So, our entertainment menu was limited to Doordarshan and a few other basic channels. Dad loved watching the news every evening, and I loved the ads that popped up. Remember those cool OG Santoor, Bajaj, and Liril ads? Their jingles were so catchy. I'd eagerly wait for them. You may call me ‘old soul and vintage at heart' and in this fast paced life, even today, I'd love to go back to those simpler times. Makes me nostalgic, always!

Fast forward to Career Choices – I had fashion designing on my top of the list. Appeared for NIFT entrance, that made dad extremely disappointed. Dad was in Public Sector Job, that too in HR and Training. He valued traditional, subjective degrees more. He thought exposure was the key, he was constantly dealing with aspiring young freshers from top-notch IITs and IIMs. Mom has always been supportive. You just need to tell her your plans, idea and she gives a go-ahead, till date. One of my Biggest Cheerleaders is my Mom!

Back to career choice- I then suggested becoming a Cabin Crew, but again, he didn’t agree. Eventually, I agreed to pursue a more conventional course. For my master's, I went for Mass Communication and Journalism. I joined a news channel and did freelance writing for brands like Havels, Samsung, and Luminous. But I figured the news industry wasn't my thing.

I applied to an Ad Agency. They hired me as a Content Writer. And surprisingly, within four months, I was the Creative Head. They knew my experience wasn’t in Advertising. Still, they promoted me by noticing the ideas I shared with them. Like on the first day, I suggested an amazing idea, which was approved. Of course, the graphic designer sitting there gave me dirty looks as he had to rework on the designs. But the idea worked wonders for me.

After a while, I decided to start my own thing. Dad understood what I was aiming for. With my prior experiences, I aimed to grow as a 'Full Service Agency.' Then, COVID-19 hit. In November 2020, I joined a course called ‘Grow Your Business Online’ by Saloni Srivastava. Thanks to her teachings, by February 2021, I launched 'The Social Unicorns.' My first international client came through a cold email. And then I haven’t looked back.

  • People told me that it was a long shot.

  • Some told me businesses are shutting down and you are starting with another.

  • Few cautioned me to think through. And then make a decision of starting a new venture.

I heard them all. In a way, they were right. Businesses were shutting down during pandemic.

I had a lil QnA with my own self.

Q: WHAT IF I TRY?

A: If I try, at least I would know what it is like to be brave to try.

Q: WHAT IF IT FAILS?

A: I have nothing to lose, Literally!

Q: IF I AM READY FOR THE STRESSFUL DAYS AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS?

A: I was already in that zone. So, it did not really matter. Isn’t it better to lose sleep and get stressed after you have taken action?

So, ultimately the decision to begin with The Social Unicorns was taken. And I am so happy to say that it was my life's best decision till date!

People ask about my office, but truth be told, we're all working remotely. No need for an office yet. You know the best part of 'The Social Unicorns' isn’t when the invoices clear. It's when a client nominates us for an award. Recently, we won the 'Digital Dynamo Award,' and I'm grateful to my clients and my fantastic team.
