By the end of college, I knew film-making was a good career option.

Bihar ka naam sun kar log generally UPSC se conect karte hai. Lekin aisa nahi hai yaar. Humare jaise bohot saare artists hain jo UPSC karne ke pressure mein creativity se compromise kar lete hai. Thank god I’m not one of them.

Hi! I’m Sankalp from Madhubani, Bihar. My city is famous for its Mithila paintings. Growing up, I was a studious kid. Papa was a government officer. So, bright student hone ka pros and cons dono tha. The career expectations were high for Civil Services. But I had other plans. Even in school, I used to participate in the drama club. Honestly, at that time, I hadn’t thought of film making. Moreover, a Creative career was a foreign concept in our home. Sab ka dhyan sirf conventional education pe focused tha.

After the tenth, I lost touch with my studies. I got poor marks in the eleventh. And there came a time when Papa said, ‘Thoda toh serious ho jao. Itne ache student the. IIT nahi toh kam se kam pass hi ho jao.’ Somehow, I passed twelfth and opted Engineering for graduation. Kyon ki kuch log Engineering pursue hi isliye karte hai ki unhe pata chale wo zindagi me kya karna chahte hai.

The first two years in Engineering were good from an academic perspective. During the third year, I started watching horror movies. The movies fascinated me. I got curious; kaise shoot karte hai, kya lightning hote hai and all that. The horror genre interested me as it’s all about illusion. And film making is also about creating the illusion.

I borrowed a Handycam from a junior and started shooting inside the college. The idea was to get comfortable with the equipment. By the end of college, I knew film making was a good career option. But, didn’t give it a serious thought and opted to prepare for GATE for M.Tech. Lekin GATE ke liye prepare karne me man nahi lga. And I started writing and exploring film making.

Thankfully, the creative aspiration showed results and gave me a sense of satisfaction. Recently, Alpviraam, my short film, has been released on Humara Movie. The movie is about a writer who is away from his home, friends and lover to pursue his dreams. It’s about the pause he took in his journey. Do watch it. You’ll love the inspirational movie.

My story will be incomplete if I don’t mention Prachi Prakash. We’re together since our school days. When I was in 9th standard. Tab humara ek theatre club tha. Aur hum tab se hi sath me theatre, drama, plays karte aa rahe hai. And sirf theatre ke space me hi nahi, Zindagi me bhi ek friend ki tarah unhone bohot sath diya hai mera. She has made numerous sacrifices for my film making. I’ll be forever grateful to her.

We’re glad to partner with Humara Movie. They release a film every week. And we feature the story of someone behind the film. After all, everyone has a story.
