From Darkness to Glory: A Journey of Determination and Triumph in the World of Blind Cricket

Updated: Jan 12

I was born with low vision. But gradually I lost my complete vision, leading to complete darkness in my life. My family was worried. What will happen to Nilesh? Will he ever be capable of living an independent life? These questions kept them tense. I was also upset but didn’t want to compromise with my fate. So, I started exploring!

Cricket fascinated me when I got an opportunity to watch the Varanasi Underarm National Cricket Pratiyogita. I started playing it with my siblings and village friends, and I dreamt of playing it for my country someday. But in a small city like Varanasi, there were limitations to blind cricket.  And I belonged to a middle-class family in Uttar Pradesh. So my parents and siblings were oblivious to blind cricket and the opportunities around it.

Luckily, Mr Mukesh Yadav and Mangal Yadav, my seniors from school guided me to relocate to Delhi for better coaching facilities. I enrolled in the Government Senior Secondary School for Blind Boys, Sewa Kutir, Kingsway Camp, Delhi. After fighting all the odds and hardships, I got selected in the top 56.

And then the National Team selection wasn’t too far! It’s such an honour to represent India. The best thing about our team is that there is no senior-junior disparity. We all are treated with equal respect. The board is helping us a lot in availing the opportunities to become a world-class player in cricket. I know Cricket is the most loved sport in India. We would also love to have some cheers for the Indian Blind Cricket Team, while we play to win the trophy for India.

We’re glad to partner with Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) and share stories "From Darkness to Glory"
