Having friends who inspire you to improve as a musician and person is terrific.

Updated: Dec 9, 2023

Growing up in a family of artists, my inclination towards dance and music began at a very young age. I started learning Kathak and Hindustani classical music when I was five. But there came a point when I had to choose between dance & music. And I went with music. Soon, I began training in Hindustani classical music, which provided me with a solid foundation.

When I went to Berklee, I was exposed to new musical horizons like Flamenco and Balkan folk music. These two have a lot of similarities with Indian classical music. People from other countries often have a hard time, but Indians trained in Indian classical music are doing well in those genres because they have already studied all those forms. Berklee taught me that music is not about competing or winning; it’s about being around people who are better than you and learning from them. Having friends who inspire you to improve as a musician and person is terrific.

After returning from Berklee, my first gig was at a jazz club in Delhi, where I sang several jazz standards. After that, I started getting gigs that were mainly jazz-oriented. Before I knew it, I got labelled as a jazz musician - and that’s when I thought I should be more mindful about what I play and where I play. After playing at the NH7 Weekender, Orange Music Festival, and other events, I started getting recognition for my music.

I am on the path to creating memorable harmonies of varied cultures with music. And I feel honoured to know that people appreciate me for my work, and my hard work has never gone unnoticed.

Today, I feel so grateful for the love received from Jawan, which is also my debut as an actor in Indian cinema. Do you know that ‘Mis Chicas’, Jawan’s song, is also my debut as a writer and singer in the film? I have no idea how the universe aligned this, but I am beyond humbled.
