Heard about Books on Delhi Metro? Tap to know the founder's story

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

I am a writer by profession and a reader by passion. My love for books goes back to my childhood when my mother used to bring books from her school’s library. We didn’t have much choice in books, so I read whatever I could find - newspapers, comics, novels, literally anything. I was very fond of reading and always wanted to read more books.

In 2017, I stumbled upon this idea and started Books On The Delhi Metro – where we leave free books for Delhi Metro’s commuters to utilise their commute time. Every concept/idea comes with its share of challenges. The biggest challenge for 'Book On The Delhi Metro' was (and still is) to connect people with the initiative's vision -- Take, Read, and Return. After people take the book, they hardly put it back into circulation. Other than that, people have generously showered us with all the love and support to thrive and make an impact.

Together, we are going through the biggest challenge in human history Covid – 19. The situation challenges our whole concept, as Delhi Metro service is suspended until further instructions. But we were always confident enough to find a solution. We recently started the #BooksForAll campaign, sending free books to everyone in India. The idea is the same; we want everyone to access good books, so we deliver happiness in a package at the reader's doorstep.

Like every problem has a solution. After darkness, there will always be light. We shall and will overcome this Corona situation as well. Besides, challenges in this situation give us the time we always dream of. Time to read and learn. For me, it is reading more books. That's the only way to become a better person and citizen and help build a more equitable world.

Shruti Sharma has given us the gift of reading. Isn’t it one of the most precious gifts? Do help her reach out to every reader in Delhi and beyond.
