It happened in February 2023. We noticed some changes in our daughter, Mishika’s body. Like when we were making her sit, she couldn’t sit. ‘Hath aur pair ka movement utna acha nhi tha, jitna uske umar k bachoon ka hota hai.’ Tensed, we took her to a neurologist at Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. The doctor prescribed a Spinal Muscular Antropy test; unfortunately, she came positive.
The doctor explained that Mishika was diagnosed with ‘SMA - Type 1’, a rare severe and rare genetic disease. The symptoms include a critical disorder, where the patient can’t control the movement of their muscles.
He said that the disease is progressive and, with time, she’ll suffer difficulty in basic things like swallowing food or liquid, moving her hands, holding her heads up and breathing too!
Before we could digest the devastating news, the doctor told us that her treatment would cost around 17.5 crores. She would need a dose of Zolgensma injection, which would be fine to heal her. But the cost!
Our world turned upside down within those few moments. Our daughter was born healthy. How could she suffer from a life-threatening disease? Being a middle-class family, how will we get her the 17.5 crores injection?
But we aren’t losing hope. We want to give Mishika a happy and healthy life. So, we have started crowdfunding.
We are trying to connect with everyone to save her. NGOs! Industrialists! FOUNDATIONS! YOUTUBERS! INFLUENCERS! RADIO! PRINT MEDIA! NEWS CHANNELS! UNICEF! MLAs! MPs! We are knocking on every door to heal Mishika. Nothing big we’ve achieved yet.
Recently we stood outside Shiv Nadar's (Founder of HCL Technologies) and Roshni Nadar’s (Chairperson of HCL Technologies) house to convey our awful situation to them. As an employee of HCL, I’m unable to reach them for help. But we’ll keep trying!
We need to provide the injection to Mishika before she turns two. Recently she turned nine months. So, only fifteen months left! Time is running out! Till now, we’ve raised around 82 lakhs only. Still, a long way to go to get the injection. Out of the 8 billion population, even if three lakh people come forward and donate 500, we can keep our Mishika’s smile alive!
