Indian team spirit is what prevailed and brought home the trophy in 1983

Updated: Dec 9, 2023

We won the 1983 World Cup, but the fact was West Indies were by far the better side. We were just confident of doing well on that given day.

The World Cup 1983 victory was special because India obviously won the World Cup and mostly because we were considered a weak side. Moreover, the circumstances and situations, such as the lack of required finances to play the tournament, were also factors. The Government were unwilling to provide the necessary assistance initially. It is because of all these factors and how we still came out victorious is what makes this victory so memorable.

With the tournament progressing and India making its way to the finals with victories over powerful teams such as Australia, England and Zimbabwe, we only had the mighty West Indies to beat. With the West Indies being the favorites and we already having lost to them in the group stage, things seemed bleak for us.

Everyone talks about my leadership skills in the final match. However, the exquisite spells from Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath are the biggest factor in finding the Loopholes in the West Indies batting line-up and guiding us to our first-ever World Cup victory while defending 183 runs only.

Up to this day, people believe that the West Indian team was the stronger side, but the Indian team spirit is what prevailed and brought home the trophy.
