It feels amazing to help Mom create her own identity.

Updated: May 26, 2023

I know a lot of you know my mother by her radiant smile and soulful voice. And thank you to each one of you for pouring us with so much love and support. Now, let me tell you the story of what goes around creating such lovely videos. Her story isn’t a happy one, but inspiring for sure!

You know, growing up, maa was good at singing. All thanks to my nani maa. She pushed her to sing in the events at their colony. Her voice was so sweet that her music teacher used to call her ‘Koyal’. So these days, she dreamed of creating her own identity through art. She didn’t want to be known as someone’s daughter, wife, or mother. “Lekin shadi ho gayi aur phir bacche ho gaye.” So she kept aside her dream and got busy caring for our family. Aasan nahi hota joint family sambhalna, but she is a superwoman.

One day I told my mom about YouTube. I talked to her about the scope of creating her own identity through creating music videos and earning as well. She researched but didn’t find much content around her music genre, i.e., ‘Banna Banni’. The music genre has this unique quirkiness of expressing true emotions in the form of music.

Anyways, we started creating videos. Initially, I knew nothing about YouTube, so I learned it slowly. And the funny part was we didn’t have Ghungroo or Dholak. We borrowed them from our neighbours, learned to play them, and kept uploading videos on YouTube. The online response was good. But offline, we received criticism. They were like, ‘Ye kya faltu ke videos banate ho.’ But we knew that we were doing something deep-rooted in our culture. So, it was easy to ignore their unnecessary criticism.

Unfortunately, maa got sick and had to undergo a uterus operation. COVID made it worse for us. Papa lost his job, I used to get anxiety attacks, and Maa often fell ill. But no matter what we were going through, she would get ready with full energy whenever I told her to make music videos. Sometimes, I feel strange seeing her energy. But I guess her love for art pushes her to get out of bed and shoot the videos.

Fortunately, her years of hard work are reaping benefits now. On YouTube, we’ve around 480k subscribers. Recently, we started posting on Facebook and Instagram as well. Within a short time, we’ve received amazing love on those platforms. We got around four lakh followers on Facebook within the last two months. Luckily, we got the first one lakh followers in six or seven days of posting content on Instagram. It felt crazy, like today we were celebrating 50k followers, and the next day we were celebrating one lakh followers.

It feels amazing to help Maa create her own identity. I hope we keep growing with your love and support.
