It isn’t easy to achieve a goal. But easy isn’t fun or fulfilling.

Were you also born and brought up in a typical Bengali family? Or do you know someone from a Bengali family? If yes, you’ll know a lot about an average day in a Bengali family. It is surrounded by art, literature, poetry and, most importantly Rabindra Sangeet.

You know, everyone in my family loves watching movies. So, I grew up watching lots of movies. I remember something funny, when I was 5 or 6 years old, every time I watched the protagonist die in a movie, I would cry my eyes out. It felt so real. Later when I grew up and realised how makers create this world through their imagination, I felt fascinated. Like, even though you know it isn’t real, you just submerge yourself in it. And I knew I had to be in the movie industry.

But again, I come from a family where you must study, get a degree, and find a job. So, I ended up pursuing Engineering. In college, a friend convinced me to join a theatre group. Back then, I was a shy, introverted girl preparing for job interviews. But when I did theatre for the first time, I loved it. It kind of changed something in me and sort of gave me the courage to follow my passion and dream.

I didn’t get a lot of support initially. I mean, saying goodbye to your degree and getting into a different field is insane. I didn’t mind making an exception, though. People say, ‘Exceptions cannot be an example.’ But to set an example, you need to be an exception. Right?

While working on a pre-production music album, I gathered the confidence to make a movie. And somehow ended up directing it. Eventually, I started learning photo editing, video editing and other stuff related to movie making. I’ve got this knack for learning new things that immensely helped me. I believe no matter how hard something is, it is possible for the human species to fathom it.

My toughest time was when my dad was in ICU. It was a devastating time in our lives. Thankfully, my dad is doing great now. But that was the time when I started my career in the film industry. And there was this point when I had to choose between my dreams and my responsibilities as an elder daughter. I choose family and took a break from work. I was giving corporate jobs serious thought as well. But glad I didn’t move ahead with it.

Life is great now. My first directorial short film, ‘Not Friends, Not Strangers,’ has been released on HumaraMovie’s YouTube channel. I and my friend Swagata who is the writer of the film, started it with an idea during the second lockdown. I am glad that we could collaborate with Humaramovie to make it live. This film is very close to my heart, and I hope it will reach everyone's heart too.

And to all the aspiring people out there! See, it isn’t easy to achieve a goal. To keep your hopes up and keep moving. To keep proving yourselves. But easy isn’t fun or fulfilling. Right? I face a lot of failures. But you must get back up every time you fall and keep moving. Make every failure your source of learning. Just be focused and keep gathering as much knowledge as you can. And never forget, patience is the key.

We’re glad to partner with Humara Movie. They release a film every week. And we feature the story of someone behind the film. After all, everyone has a story.
