Love Knows No Miles: A Tale of Long-Distance Marriage Defying Borders and Blossoming Across Continents

You may have heard about ‘Long-distance Relationships.’ How about a ‘Long-distance Marriage’? I’m sure no one would dare to think about it. Especially when the distance isn’t from a different city or a state. But a country with a difference of 12 hours and 30 minutes in time zones. Practically, it does matter! But, love makes it easy to make the decision. Because as long as love is there, who cares!

I met Kortney online through a common friend. She slid into my Instagram dm. ‘Fir, kya tha? Humari non-stop baatein shuru ho gye!’ We talked a lot and soon became good friends! During the COVID-19 lockdown, I realized it was much more than just friendship. My father had a heart attack. And, due to COVID-19 guidelines, only one person could stay with him. So, I took him to the Durgapur Mission Hospital.

I was already stressed a lot. And during those challenging times, she was there with me. We were in constant touch through virtual chats. Like we also used to virtually eat together. She developed feelings for me first and proposed to me. Initially, I denied thinking, ‘Mereko abhi waisa feelings nahi hai. Hum dono dost ache hai.’ We stayed in touch. And over time, through our conversations, I realized she means something precious to me. She loved and respected my parents as much as I do. And I couldn’t have asked for anything better than this with my life partner. We came in a relationship on 2nd August, 2020.

We met for the first time on 3rd April, 2022. Aah! The moment I saw her! It was magical and emotional! We didn’t care where her luggage was or where we were! We hugged and cried without thinking a bit about what the people around us would think of us! And, guess what? By the time we met for the first time, we had already decided to marry each other.

We got married on 14th April, 2022 in our traditional Indian style. Almost 800 people attended our wedding. My family, cousins and friends really supported us a lot to make our wedding successful. You know, Devansh, my best friend, did the ‘Kanyadaan’ ritual. ‘Wo Kortney ko dil se behan manta hai.’ And in the absence of Kortney’s parents, he made sure, ‘ki ushey koi kami mehsoos na ho.’

Cut to present - we are in a long distance marriage. I’m in India. She is in the US. Like normal couples, we have our share of fights. But we get through it together. We go on virtual dates. Due to different time zones, we face more challenges. But, all for love. She loves to celebrate the various festivals of India. Like an Indian bride, she proudly wears ‘Sindoor’ everyday on her forehead. And whenever someone asks her about it , she never shy away from sharing our love story!
