I was in my office, when Colonel Punj and Colonel Goyal, both from our Palampur and both retired, came to our house and asked about me. They told Vikram’s mother that they need to speak to me urgently. She became suspicious, when you family member is on the battlefield, the family lives in constant doubt and fear. She called me up and asked me to came as soon as possible.
I left my office in my car and it took me half an hour to reach, when I reached I saw to five to 10 neighbours were standing outside, even then I got suspicious that there might be some sad news. As I reached home, Vikram’s mother asked me to first go inside and bow at our home temple first, I did that, and came outside.
Colonel Punj, came forward held my shoulders and took me to a corner and said, ‘Captain Vikram Batra, is no more’. The moment he said that, I was likely to fall down, one of our neighbour held me tightly.
One word came out of my mouth ‘HARI OM’.
That ‘HARI OM’ word give it strength and because of that I was able to control my self.
My son gave me the happiest moment of my life, the moment when he defeated the enemy and hoist the tri-colour again on the land of our country.
