Some incidents made me realise the power of an Artist.

Updated: May 26, 2023

I lost my father at the age of 14. He was an army man. Unfortunately, he got a brain infection while posted in Sikkim. Even after the surgery, we couldn’t save him after the third paralysis attack. Since then, my mother and elder sister Hema cared for me.

I studied in an army hostel in Ranikhet. So my upbringing was much like an army aspirant. We used to wake up at 4 a.m and follow the general routine of army personnel. Like even our hostel wardens were army Subedar or Hawaldaar. After the twelfth, my mother wanted me to join the army, lekin mera man nahi tha. I wanted to explore other fields and experience the thrill of life. So, I moved to Delhi and studied through Open Learning. I stayed with my elder brother and did odd jobs to be financially independent. These jobs didn’t give me the thrill I wanted in my life.

Due to my army upbringing, I had a good physique. So my friends suggested me to try modelling. I joined a gym, and within a few months, I was in good shape to explore the glamorous world. Initially, I enjoyed the modelling career. My good portfolio allowed me to witness Salman Khan as the showstopper of an event in Delhi. But, after some time, the fashion industry became monotonous. I talked to my friends about it, and one of them suggested to do theatre. And it changed my life.

Somehow, I connected with Arvind Gaur, the renowned Indian theatre director, through Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts. He called me to Indian Habitat Center, where I watched artists performing ‘Nukkad Natak’. Their acting gave me goosebumps, and I was like, ‘Bhai yahi karna hai’.

At that time, Arvind Kejriwal, our current Delhi CM, was committed to leading a movement against corruption. So through theatre, I raised my voice against corruption. Unfortunately, the spine-chilling Nirbhaya incident also happened the same year. We did protest together and were beaten by the police too! In fact, I was one to admit Arvind Kejriwal sir to the hospital for the treatment. These incidents made me realise the power of an artist. I worked passionately to grow in the industry and got small and big wins.

Throughout my journey, along with my family, my friend Anurag has greatly supported my life. We have been friends for more than fifteen years, and he is a kind of life guru for me. He has been my best critic throughout the journey.

Recently, my short film, 'The Invitation', was released on Humara Movie. It’s a story of a night and somewhat related to the dynamics of a relationship. Won’t tell you much about the movie as it would give spoilers. But do watch it. It’s an entertaining movie. You’ll have a great time watching it!

We’re glad to partner with Humara Movie. They release a film every week. And we feature the story of someone behind the film. After all, everyone has a story.

Delhi Stories is an emerging platform to feature inspirational, motivational, relatable and beautiful stories. Do you also have an interesting story like Manoj?
